He was born in Ironbridge, Shropshire on 6th February 1924. Billy Wright’s actual name was William Ambrose Wright. His nickname was “The Iron Horse” the
name was acquired because of his birthplace; he was also known as “Snowy” by his team mates because of his blond hair.
Billy was educated at Madeley Senior School in Wolverhampton and he played brilliantly for his school team and in one game he scored 10 goals. As a youngster Billy Wright supported Arsenal football
club. He was also a physical education instructor then he became a corporal and a staff sergeant before becoming a footballer.
